China ancient Story of "Qing Guo & Qing Cheng"

She is named “Qing Cheng”.  Could she be beautiful enough to “Qin Cheng” ?

“Qing Guo” means a monarch neglect his duty and lose the country.
“Qing Cheng” means the soldiers forget fighting and lose the city.
How could it happen? It was just because a lady with peerless beauty have a look at them.

In china, people describe a beautiful lady with “ Qing Guo Qing Cheng”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Story of “ Qing Guo & Qing Cheng”

You must know “Helen of Troy”? It is an old story from Iliad and now if people say “Helen of Troy ” when they meet a very beautiful lady.

Actually, in ancient China, there was a similar story and saying.  It is named “Qing Guo & Qing Cheng”.

In Western Han Dynasty of ancient China, there was famous musician named Lee Yan Nian (around 100 BC).  Lee was the family name and Yan Nian was his given name.  He was good at composing and singing.
The Emperor Wu of Western Han appreciated his music and songs and kept him in the palace.
One day, Mr. Lee Sing a new Song for the emperor.
北方有佳人,绝世而独立。
 一顾倾人城,再顾倾人国。
宁不知倾城与倾国?
佳人难再得。
Chinese language is too magic and beautiful, it is really a pity that I could just tell out the meaning of this song in English but could not show you how beautiful it is.

“There is a brilliant lady in the northland,
She is lonely and with peerless beauty,
At her first glance, Soldiers forget fighting and lose the city,
At the second glance, a monarch neglect his duty and lose the country,
Don’t they know they would lose the city and country?
However, it is hard to meet such a lady any more!”

At the end of Singing, a sigh escaped Emperor Wu, “ is such remarkable lady in the world?”
Princess Ping Yang, Sister of the emperor introduced Ms. Lee, Sister of Mr. Lee Yan Nian.
Yes, she was really such lady!
Then Ms. Lee became one of the emperor’s loving wives.

Kurhn Doll -- Introduction of Moon's Goddness

Do you know there is a woman?
She flies to the moon!
Her name is Chang Er~~
……………………………………………………..
Legend of Chang-Er, the Moon Goddess

The story begins around 2170 B.C. after the great flood in the Hsia dynasty. Yu, king of many kingdoms, was credited with stopping the flood, and with teaching farmers how to cultivate their fields, thus commencing a prosperous epoch.

At the same time in Heaven the Jade Emperor wished to help the farmers raise animals and cultivate their fields. He gave orders to his ten sons to become ten suns and travel across the sky one at a time, each taking one day. The ten young men disobeyed; all ten of them came out every day, and the heat from ten suns shining all at once made the earth intolerably hot. People and animals died of heat, rivers dried up, land became barren and forests scorched and burned.

The farmers prayed, giving sacrifices and burning incense to Heaven for deliverance. The Jade Emperor heard their prayers and saw the destruction caused by his sons. He sent Hou Yi, his bravest god, down to earth to solve the problem of the ten suns and end the catastrophe. Hou Yi was a good, courageous god with a beautiful wife, Chang Er. Deeply in love with each other, they were known as the Divine Couple. Chang Er didn't like the thought of going down to earth, but she was unwilling to be separated from her husband, so together they descended to earth and became mortals among the Eastern clans.

Hou Yi was a great archer and brought his magic bow from heaven with him. Knowing that Hou Yi came from heaven, the people of the clans proclaimed him to be their leader.

Seeing how much suffering and destruction were caused by the heat of the ten suns, Hou Yi climbed to the top of Tienshan mountain and began negotiating with the suns to have pity on the unfortunate people. He pleaded to the suns to take turns and make their journeys across the sky singly, one for each day, and explained the white blaze of ten suns is much too much for the land to bear. He also told them how much Heaven loves all living things.

But the ten audacious suns considered it dull and boring to go across the sky one at a time and that much more fun was to be had by coming out together, so they refused to listen. They increased their heat and caused even more suffering. This angered Hou Yi. He took out his magic bow and arrows and shot down nine of the suns; the last sun begged for his life and promised obedience at performing his task of separating night from day.

Finally the earth was at peace and people enjoyed their work and lives. However, when Hou Yi made his report to the Jade Emperor, he was furious at Hou Yi for killing his nine sons, and refused to let the Divine Couple return to Heaven.

As leader of the clans, there was much for Hou Yi to do on earth. He taught the people many ways to defend their land and themselves. He was so busy with his duties he became neglectful of his lovely and lonely wife. Chang Er was especially unhappy to be an earthly mortal with all of mortality's suffering, aging and death in particular. Also, she was angry at Hou Yi for shooting down the Jade Emperor's nine sons, and the couple became unhappy and estranged.

To avoid arguing with his wife, Hou Yi spent his time travelling about the land alone. He became familiar to its people, performing many good deeds wherever he travelled. He also killed a gigantic, 100,000-foot snake and a nine-headed monster that had caused much distress and thousands of lives. Many times he prayed to the Jade Emperor to let himself and his wife return to Heaven, but the Emperor refused his plead and so Hou Yi and Chang Er remained as mortals, suffering as ordinary human beings do.

In his travel he chanced to meet a beautiful mortal woman, Mi Fei. She was the wife of Feng Yee, the God of Water, who had a reputation as a womanizer and for ignoring his wife. Both lonelyd, Mi Fei and Hou Yi became friends and later lovers. In legend, such things never remain unpunished. When Feng Yee returned and discovered his wife's infidelity, he was furious and transformed himself into a white dragon, roaring and plunging in the water, destroying fields and killing many people. Hou Yi thought the dragon was an evil sea monster. He took up his bow and shot, blinding Feng Yee in one eye. Thereupon, the god of waters registered a complaint with the Jade Emperor. The Emperor considered all the good deeds that Hou Yi had done for the mortals, and since he was already under punishment, the Emperor merely ordered Hou Yi to go home to Chang Er and never see Mi Fei again.

Hou Yi had no choice but to return home. Chang Er was angry with him for his unfaithfulness and unhappiness came between the once "divine" couple. Hou Yi knew that he had wronged his wife and tried to soothe her, telling her that tears would make her age faster, as they were now mortals. Chang Er looked at her reflection in the water, for in those days there were no mirrors. She was terrified to see wrinkles appearing around her eyes, and demanded that Hou Yi find some way to restore her immortality.

Hou Yi was desolate and dared not stay at home, but he couldn't violate the Jade Emperorís order by going to Mi Fei. He became violent and drunk. In his drunkenness he treated the people cruelly. There were two men among the people who began to plot against him, Feng Meng and Han Cho. Both were opportunists. Han Cho told Hou Yi that the Royal Goddess resided on top of Kunlun Mountain and had a pill of immortality.

Hou Yi decided that for the saje of peace at home he would climb Kunlun Mountain and begg the Royal Goddess for the pill of immortality. The Goddess, taking pity on him, gave him her one remaining pill. She instructed Hou Yi that if one person took the pill he would ascend to Heaven, but if he cut the pill into two halves and shared it with another, they could live forever. The pill had to be taken on the 15th night of the eighth month when the moon was fullest. Hou Yi was very happy and thanked the Royal Goddess exuberantly and went home to Chang Er. They decided to divide the pill and take it at the proper time so that they could both attain immortality.

Three days before the 15th day of the eighth month, Hou Yi heard of a medicinal solution called "jade elixir" that could be found on Tienshan mountain, an elixir that could could prevent women from aging and allow them to stay eternally beautiful. Hou Yi wished to please Chang Er and resume a happy life at home, so he decided that he could make the trip in three days to obtain this wonderful medicine and to surprise his wife. He left for Tienshan immediately.

On the 15th of the eighth month, Chang Er saw no sign of Hou Yi. She waited and later grew impatient, and sought out Feng Meng the schemer and asked where her husband was. Feng Meng lied and told Chang Er that Hou Yi had gone to see Mi Fei. Chang Er believed him and became furious at her unfaithful husband. As the moon rose Chang Er went into the garden, looking up to heaven and remembering the contentment in the life of immortality and the happiness of heaven, and then she thought of the sorrows of the earth. She was confused and filled with emotion. Thinking that Hou Yi had abandoned her, she swallowed the whole pill and at once she felt her body becoming lighter, rising upwards towards the sky. At this moment Hou Yi arrived back with the jade elixir and saw Chang Er ascending faster and faster.

The gods and goddesses in heaven despised Chang Er because she had abandoned her husband. Chang Er had to change her direction and head toward the cold palace in the moon. Hou Yi watched from the earth and took out his magic bow to shoot down the moon. He aimed but he could not bear to kill his wife. Frustrated and saddened, he destroyed his magical weapons and took to drink.

Hou Yi's enemy Feng Meng watch and waited until Hou Yi was senselessly drunk, then he attacked Hou Yi then and killed him. When Chang Er arrived at the cold palace in the moon and saw how her husband had been cruelly murdered she deeply mourned what she had done. She was cut off from the happy life in heaven and committed to eternity alone in the moon, becaming the moon goddess.

Each year on the 15th day of the eighth month, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest, people look at the moon and try to see in it the image of a beautiful maiden.

Kurhn doll -- Story of Lady White

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=151274954083

Introduction:

It is a romantic fairy story. People talked about it for thousand years.

She is a thousand-year-old snake.

People call her "Lady White" or "Fairy White Snake".

She was a small white snake in EMEI Mountain of Sichuan thousand years ago. He saved her life by occasion.

She practiced magic of fairy for thousand years and successed in cultivating to be a human being and being qualified to be a fairy

In gentle spring rain, by the broken Bridge Side, at West Lake of Hang Zhou, they met with each other. She looked really pretty, gentle and graceful.  And he was now a handsome young gentleman after thousand year transmigration.

They fell in love with each other at the most beautiful season of West Lake.

But their relationship is forbidden by nature's law. When a Buddhist abbot discovers her true origin Lady White Snake must fight for both her marriage and her freedom.

Body:

On the Tomb Sweeping Day (one of Chinese festival in April), lots of travelers visited to The Broken Bridge when the West Lake was in spring and painting as well as its most beautiful time. It was an unforgettable scene. Suddenly, two considerably beautiful girls appeared out of water area of the West Lake. What's up? Why can human come out from underwater? The reason is they are both the snake fairies who cultivated themselves to be the shape of humankind. But they were indeed kind-hearted and benevolent. They adored the colorful life of human and then became two pretty ladies named Bai Suzhen and Xiao Qing (a green-colored snake or carp fairy) respectively. They used to prefer playing around the West Lake Scenic Area. Why did she like wandering around the West Lake of Hangzhou. The reason is mentioned below: When the Lady White still was a snake living in Emei Mountain, a monk named Fa Hai found and caught it. A little shepherd begged him to set it free at the cost of something special, and the monk agreed and released it. This snake remembered this boy and cultivated itself in the caves of Emei Mountain for thousands of years. After its success in cultivating to be a human being and being qualified to be a fairy, Bodhisattva Kwan-Yin implied that she must repay the little shepherd's help before becoming a fairy and told her where she could find him---The West Lake of Hangzhou. Hence she came to Hangzhou and met her young sister Xiao Qing. But they could not find that man for a long time, which made her feel disappointed. However, she still kept looking for him with her superpower.

One day, Bai Suzhen and Xiao Qing took a rest in the pavilion on the lakeside of the West Lake and unexpectedly found a handsome young man standing on the Broken Bridge near to where they seated. She felt too extraordinary and checked him with her superpower. She excitedly confirmed he was the figure she looked for a long time! This man's full name was Xu Xian! When they followed him to Qing Bo Men (Clean Wave Gate), it rained heavily suddenly. The rain unpreparedly showered over them. When they were worried, unexpectedly an umbrella appeared above their heads. They turned around and found an elegant and scholarly young man holding the umbrella for them. He was Xu Xian! This was their first meeting.

The Image of Monk Fa Hai

They came into being the adoration when they saw each other. Xiao Qing asked Xu Xian for his name. Xu Xian answered:"My name is Xu Xian and live nearby The Broken Bridge". Xiao Qing and Lady White introduced themselves as well. Since then, they used to met one another and later, they got married and opened a medicine shop, which is today's widely-famous Bao He Tang(保和堂, Harmony Preservation Hall). They led a happy life. They cured a lot of patients with the unknown and intractable cases, besides they never charged the poor patients, so their business became better and better. More and more patients believed and were willing to see the doctors in Bao He Tang. The local citizens called Bai Suzhen Lady White respectfully. However, their better life together with their welcomed operation of medicine shop made a person annoyed. He was Monk Fa Hai, the born opponent of Lady White who used to attack Lady White in the name of Buddha and Kwan-yin for many generations. Monk Fa Hai lived in Jin Shan Si(金山寺, Jinshan Buddhist Temple, which is located in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province). Due to the effectiveness of Lady White's perfect treatment, less and less pilgrims went to temple for praying.

One Day, he got to Bao He Tang and saw Lady White treating the patients. This led Monk Fa Hai to being angry. After his careful check, he surprisedly found this Lady White was not a common figure but a White Snake Fairy. Monk Fa Hai had some magic, but he was not kind-hearted. Since he knew the real identity of Lady White, he all the day made efforts to break up this couple and undermine Bao He Tang. Therefore, he secretly invited Xu Xian to Jinshan Buddhist Temple, and he told Xu Xian:"Your wife is a snake monster, and you must break up from him right away. Otherwise, she will eat you!". Hearing this, Xu Xian was fairly furious and said:"My wife was merciful and kind, and she loves me so much. She would not hurt me even if she is the snake fairy indeed. Furthermore, now she is pregnant, and I never leave her at all!". Monk Fa Hai found Xu Xian did not believe him and became angry. He imprisoned Xu Xian in temple. In Bao He Tang, Lady White anxiously waited for Xu Xian's returning. After several days, Lady White heard of that Xu Xian was forcefully stayed in Jinshan Temple by Monk Fa Hai. Lady White and Xiao Qing ran to Jinshan Temple and begged Fa Hai to set Xu Xian free. Monk Fa Hai sneered and said:"You, a monster of snake, I suggest you get away from the earthly world at once, or I will punish you seriously!". Lady White was treated arrogantly and unjustly. She had no choice but use her superpower to save Xu Xian from Jinshan Temple. She pulled out her Gold Hairpin and repeated some mysterious abracadabra. In a flash, the whole Jinshan Temple was flooded and the huge waves hit the Jinshan Mountain again and again. Monk Fa Hai quickly took off his cassock and made it become a long high bank situating before the Gate of Jinshan Temple. The flood raised one more inch and the bank rose up as well. At the time, Lady White was pregnant and could not defeat Monk Fa Hai. Finally, Lady White was also captured by Monk Fa Hai by a magic bowl. From then on, Lady White was imprisoned under Leifeng Pagoda. This couple was broken up. But Xiao Qing fled away from Jinshan Temple and practiced the magic in Deep Mountain for many years and finally defeated Monk Fa Hai. She compelled Monk Fa Hai to hide into abdomen of the crab. Lady White and Xu Xian lived together once again. They met on the Broken Bridge again and lived a happy life again!

This is a kind of conclusion of story. There is another result that like this: due to the harmful result from the flood created by Lady White. Bodhisattva Kwan-yin showed her mercy to the common people and ordered Monk Fa Hai to make Lady White under house arrest of Leifeng Pagoda where today is located on the lakeside of the West Lake, after she gave birth to her son. Xu Xian was too sad and became a monk in Jinshan Temple. Their son was brought up by his old sister. Before the house arrest of Lady White, Kwan-yin told her that she would be living under the Leifeng Pagoda until his son became Zhuang Yuan (the top winner in National Imperial Examination, who was said the earthly Ziweixing of the heaven as well as the leader of scholarly people and readers). Later, their son succeeded in imperial examination and saved his mother from Leifeng Pagoda.
This is a touching story actually. The relevant short stories available in literature are duverse, and the representative is the article named Lady White Suppressed Under Leifeng Pagada Eternally in book titled Jing Shi Tong Yan(written by Feng Menglong, a famous writer and playwright in Ming Dynasty), also, there are a large amount of operas themed with the Lady White. By the way, this story became an important part of Lei Feng Xi Zhao(The Sunset Glow at Leifeng Pagoda) one of top ten scenic spots of The West Lake.
It is magical that in 1924, the Leifeng Pagoda was really broken down. People are saying it is the success of Lady White.
